Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities

This faculty offers traditional humanities subjects that include History and English, as well as more design-based courses in areas such as Art and Architecture. Is humanity division is world-class as it currently holds five National Teacher Fellows. The most recent being Deborah Cartmell, Reader in English, who was made a Fellow in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning support. All the subjects are taught at the Clephan Building, which was refurbished specifically for the Faculty’s use. Guests and speakers with backgrounds in media, arts, literature, film and politics speak at the Cultural Exchanges event held at the Clephan Building. Most recently, the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities has collaborated with two other European universities to offer a new Master’s course. The course is based on International Centre for Sports History and Culture – the MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport. This is organised by Centre International d’Etude du Sport (CIES) and endorsed by FIFA. The main idea of the course was created to promote management education within the sports world. This shows that the Faculty is keen on evolving so that students get all the required tools to spearhead a new career.

Faculty of Business and Law

This faculty comprises of more than 4,000 students and 150 academic staff, making it one of the larger providers of business education in the UK. It has a long history of international partnerships that can be seen in its collaboration to help establish a business school in India – the Daly College Business School. All the teaching happens at the Hugh Aston Building which required an investment of £35 million to be made. The construction of the building released the 14th-century Magazine Gateway from four lanes of traffic, allowing a tree-lined square to be created; the Magazine Square.

Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

The faculty is based in the Hawthorn Building, which was previously an Arts College. Legend has it that Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie played at the venue in the 1960s. Currently, The faculty is De Montfort’s largest faculty, housing roughly 500 full-time and part-time staff, as well as approximately 8,000 students. It is composed of four interconnected schools –

  • Leicester School of Allied Health Sciences
  • The School of Applied Social Sciences
  • The Leicester School of Nursing
  • Midwifery and the Leicester School of Pharmacy

The four schools interrelate so as to allow collaboration across subjects in teaching, consultancy and research. Some of the collaborations include sciences like Biomedical Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Applied Criminology, Social Work and a lot more.

Computing, Engineering and Media (CEM)

On 1st October 2008, the faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media was renamed from its original name – Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering. It comprises the Leicester Media School, the School of Engineering and the School of Computing. The main faculty building is the Queen’s Building. Its unique design means that the building does not need heating as the temperature is controlled through a series of vents
