Indian Government Scholarships For Studying Abroad In 2026

Uploaded on April 10, 2024 •

Last updated on: May 18, 2026

Studying abroad is expensive, but the Indian government offers scholarships that can cover tuition fees, living costs, airfare, research funding, and even the interest on your education loan. Some of the biggest options in 2026 include the National Overseas Scholarship, Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship, Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship, Dr Ambedkar Interest Subsidy Scheme, Ms Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship, Raman-Charpak Fellowship, and Telangana Overseas Scholarship Schemes. Most programmes require strong academic performance, proof of admission, income eligibility, or research/work experience, depending on the programme. Several applications are currently open with deadlines around June–July 2026, while others are expected to reopen later this year or in early 2027.

Indian Government Scholarships For Studying Abroad In 2026

A lot of students planning to study abroad spend months researching universities, courses, and countries, but very little time researching who will pay for it. By the time they get to that part, the application windows have closed, the deadlines have passed, and they’re either taking out a loan or quietly shelving the plan.

Not many people know about the Indian government scholarships for studying abroad. This is not because they are hard to find, but because most students think they are either too hard to receive or too small to matter. Neither one is true. The National Overseas Scholarship covers tuition, living expenses, and return airfare. The Fulbright-Nehru programme sends you to a US institution and pays for your studies through a bilateral educational foundation. The Raman-Charpak Fellowship brings PhD students to France for up to six months. They get €1,500 a month, airfare, and insurance.

The Indian government really does offer these scholarships to study overseas, and the application periods are currently open. This guide talks about all 7 of them, what they pay for, who may apply, where each deadline is as of April 2026, and how to apply.

You need an unconditional offer from a university in the top 500 QS rankings. The funding covers almost everything: tuition paid directly to the university, a maintenance allowance of USD 15,400 per year (GBP 9,900 in the UK), a contingency allowance for books and thesis expenses, visa fees, and return economy airfare.

Dr Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans

This one works differently from the others; it’s not a direct scholarship but a financial relief scheme for OBC and EBC students who’ve taken an education loan to study abroad. The Government of India pays 100% of the interest on that loan during the moratorium period (the course duration plus one year, or six months after you get a job, whichever comes first). On a loan of ₹20 lakhs, that’s a significant amount of interest the government absorbs, so you’re not drowning in it while still studying.

        Key Highlights

Interest Subsidy100% of interest during the moratorium period
        Max Loan Eligible₹20,00,000

        • Must have taken an education loan from a Scheduled Bank under the IBA Education Loan Scheme

Deadline: Rolling; always open. Apply through your Nodal Bank after your loan is sanctioned. No fixed window.

        How to Apply

Go to the official website: socialjustice.gov.in

Get an education loan from a bank for your authorised course abroad, following IBA rules.

You can get the interest subsidy through the Nodal Bank that is connected to the scheme.

Send in the necessary paperwork, such as your admission letter, fee structure, income certificate, caste certificate, and loan approval letter.

Pro Tips for Applying to Indian Government Scholarships for Studying Abroad

Pro Tips for Applying to Indian Government Scholarships for Studying Abroad
                • Understand the Eligibility Criteria Carefully.

Category requirements, income caps, and age limits: each Indian government scholarship to study abroad has very specific conditions. Read the official guidelines, not third-party summaries, before deciding whether to apply.

                • Research All Available Government Scholarships.

Don’t stop at the ones you’ve heard of. State-level schemes like Telangana’s ePASS and central schemes like the Dr Ambedkar Interest Subsidy are consistently undersubscribed because students either don’t know they exist or assume they won’t qualify.

                • Prepare Documents in Advance.

Caste certificate, income certificate, offer letter, academic transcripts, some of these take weeks to obtain. Start collecting months before the deadline, not days.

                • Focus on a Strong Statement of Purpose.

The SOP is what sets apart the people who are chosen for competitive fellowships like Fulbright-Nehru and Agatha Harrison from those who are not. Be clear about your research aims, your background, and why this fellowship, not just any funding, is the best fit for your study.

                • Maintain a Good Academic Record.

Most of these scholarships for studying abroad by the Indian government carry minimum percentage requirements. Anything below 55–60% and several doors close. Consistency matters more than peaks.

                • Get Strong Letters of Recommendation.

A generic recommendation is worse than no recommendation for fellowship applications. Choose people who know your work well and can speak specifically to your research potential, not just your character.

                • Apply Before Deadlines.

Many indian government scholarships for studying abroad portals close at midnight exactly and do not accept late submissions. Set calendar reminders two weeks and two days before each deadline.

                • Double-Check Application Details.

Mismatched names, incorrect category codes, and unsigned forms are among the most common reasons for rejection. Review every field before submitting.

                • Prepare for Interviews (If Required).

Fulbright-Nehru includes an interview with the USIEF National Selection Committee. Agatha Harrison does too. Know your research proposal inside out and be ready to defend your choices.

                • Track Your Application Status.

Use the reference numbers and official portals, Sakshat, ePASS, nosmsje.gov.in, to track progress. Don’t assume no news is good news.

                Conclusion

The Indian government gives out real scholarships to students who do the groundwork to study overseas. These scholarships are not made up; they are real and are offered every year. Most of the time, those who miss out don’t do so because they weren’t qualified. They either applied too late, misunderstood the requirements, or didn’t know the chance was there.

Choose the programmes you can apply for as step one. Then check the deadlines on the appropriate websites, start gathering your documentation now, and give your SOP the time it needs. Once you have the money, the next step is to choose a place to live. UniAcco helps international students find verified, affordable student accommodation near the world’s top universities—with 24×7 personal support and a lowest price guarantee.

                Frequently Asked Questions

The top Indian government scholarships for studying abroad currently active or opening soon include: the Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship (deadline ~July 2026), the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship (deadline ~July 2026), and the Raman-Charpak Fellowship (portal opening April 2026). The Dr Ambedkar Interest Subsidy Scheme accepts rolling applications year-round.

Several of these scholarships for studying abroad by the Indian government are fully or nearly fully funded. The NOS covers tuition, maintenance allowance, airfare, visa, and books. The Fulbright-Nehru covers tuition, living costs, airfare, and insurance. Telangana’s schemes cover up to ₹20 lakhs plus flight and visa. The Dr Ambedkar scheme isn’t a direct fund; it subsidises the interest on your education loan during the moratorium period, which, on a ₹20 lakh loan, is substantial.

The NOS is for Indian students from the Scheduled Castes (SC), Denotified Nomadic Tribes (DNT), Landless Agricultural Labourers, and Traditional Artisan communities. To apply, you must be under 35, have a qualifying degree with at least 60% of the marks, a family income of less than ₹8 lakhs per year, and an unconditional offer from a university that is in the top 500 QS rankings.

It depends on the specific schemes. The NOS makes it clear that anyone who gets the scholarship cannot also get any other Central or State Government scholarship at the same time. You can’t apply for both the Fulbright-Nehru and Fulbright-Kalam scholarships in the same year. You can usually combine the Dr Ambedkar Interest Subsidy with other scholarships; any money you get from other scholarships may be taken off the subsidy calculation.
