7 Incredible Things To Do In France For Students

59 Rivoli: The Notorious Artist Squat

The Haussmann Era Building at 59 Rivoli was abandoned by Crédit Lyonnais which was then taken over by a group of 3 artists that were popularly known as “KGB” (Kalex, Gaspard, and Bruno) who claimed the building in 1999. Ever since then, the building has become a popular place for exhibitions, events and music which are organised by artists. The place attracts more than 40,000 tourists every year who visit the place to experience artistic norms first-hand, making it the third most visited centre for contemporary art in Paris.

The Duluc Private Agency

The Duluc Private Agency is the oldest private detective agency in France and this makes it one of the top France tourist attractions. Rue du Louvre looks as if it was recreated from a movie scene while the neon-green sign makes it look mysterious and incredible. The striking Prussian-blue door underneath has a doorbell and a brass plate, simply inscribed, “Duluc. Enquêtes 1er étage” (Duluc. Investigations. 1st Floor). This agency is run by a family and the current head is Madame Duluc, who inherited the agency from her father.

Visit The Notre Dame Cathedral

One of the top places to go in France is the Notre Dame Cathedral. You may have heard and even seen this cathedral because it is extremely famous. If you visit France without experiencing the medieval vibe of this cathedral, you are missing out on one of the most unique places to go in France. This church reflects the capital city’s prestige brilliantly with its lofty archways, rose-stained glass windows, ribbed vaults, ancient architecture and more.

Fountain of the Innocents

Fountain of the Innocents is hands-down one of the most unique places to visit in France. Regardless of your reason for visiting France – you may be a French student scholar or a tourist, either way, you must visit the Fountain of Innocents. It looks pretty much like any other public square in Paris but is known for this breathtaking fact – the square used to be a burial ground for the dead. The oldest grave dates back to the 12th century and as years went by, it started to look more like a mass grave. Today, the site of the gruesome burial ground is a hub of cafes, shops, and bistros. The 16th-century Fountain of Innocents, the oldest monumental fountain in Paris, stands as a memorial to the city’s lost cemetery.

Sausage Stained Glass of Saint Eustache Church AKA. ‘Guts Of Paris’

The Marche de Halles was known as the Guts of Paris and was a marketplace for all kinds of meat. The legendary Pied de Cochon restaurant, well-known for its fried pig-foot specialities and its tipsy swine signage has been helping to keep the pork tradition alive since the 1940s.  The marketplace was demolished in the year 1971 but the smell of lard, pork meat and skin still lingers in the halls of the Saint Eustache Church.

Paris: Musée d’Orsay

Situated on the left bank of Seine and next to the bygone railway station, Musee d’Orsay is the second largest museum in France after Louvre. This museum is known for art collected from French artists. You can take a stroll through Musée on your own or with the help of a tour guide. The museum holds art pieces between the 1800 and 1900 and includes artworks from Monet, Cézanne, and Gauguin, among others and the museum now organises virtual tours globally.

The Relic Cryptic of St. Helena at Église Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles

St. Helena was directly responsible for the spread of Christianity through the Roman Empire and was the first person to bring Christian relics back to Rome. While Helena died in 330 in Rome, most of her remains can be found in Église Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles. In the year 840 a monk from Hautvillers, France returned from a trip to Rome with a surprising souvenir and the pope allowed the relic to stay in France and the remaining relics of St. Helena stayed in the monastery until the French Revolution broke out. Today the church remains locked but you can ask the custodian to open it for you.
