The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, abbreviated as the U15, is a group of 15 public research universities in Canada. This organisation, headquartered in Ottawa, was founded in 1991.

What Exactly Does Canada’s U15 Team Do?

Above all, Canada’s U15 is a member of the Global Network of research-intensive university organisations dedicated to advancing university research worldwide. Also, Canada’s U15:

Collaborates with federal policymakers to improve our environment for fundamental research.

Finally, Canada’s U15 works tirelessly to contribute more than $36 billion to the Canadian economy each year by conducting 80 percent of all competitive university research in Canada. Besides, they conduct $8.5 billion in research each year and account for roughly 75% of all doctorates awarded in Canada. Essentially, the U15 of Canada owns 85 percent of Canadian university technology licences and 81 per cent of Canadian university patents (U15).

University of Alberta

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the University of Alberta is one of the leading Canadian research universities. The university is ranked 113th in the world and among the top 5 public research universities in the country by QS world ranking in 2020. It is also deemed as a ‘Comprehensive academic and research university because of the wide array of professional and academic programs the university offers.

University of British Columbia

Established in the year 1908, the University of British Columbia is one of the top 50 public research universities in the world. In 2020, UBC was ranked as the second-best university in Canada by Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university has two main campuses one in Vancouver and another one in Okanagan with twelve and seven faculties respectively.

University of Calgary

A member of the U15, the University of Calgary is one of the top Canadian research universities situated in the Alberta province of Canada. The University of Calgary was started in 1944, as a Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, and became an autonomous university in 1966. It comprises 14 faculties and more than 85 research centres and institutes. The University of Calgary was ranked the 9th best university in Canada, by QS rankings in 2020.

Dalhousie University

Located in the eastern province of Nova Scotia, Canada, Dalhousie University is one of the major public research universities in Canada. The university offers 4,000 courses, 180-degree programs and twelve faculties in its four campuses across Nova Scotia. This university is an active member of the U15 – a group of Canada’s 15 research-intensive universities.

University of Manitoba

Founded in the year 1877, the University of Manitoba is the first research university in Western Canada and one of the oldest universities in Canada. McMaster University

McGill University

University of Waterloo

Established in 1956, the University of Waterloo is a reputed public research university in Ontario province of Canada. The university has its main campus in Waterloo, three satellite campuses and four affiliated university colleges. University of Western Ontario

The University of Western Ontario, commonly known as Western University, is a public research university based in London, Ontario. Originally founded in 1878, the university currently has over 24,000 students studying in twelve different faculties and schools. It is a constituent member of the U15 group of Canadian Research universities.

Laval University

Laval University is one of the oldest universities in Canada founded by a royal charter issued by Queen Victoria in 1852. A member of U15, it is a French-language public research university located in Quebec City, Quebec. In terms of research funding, Laval University is ranked as one among the top 10 Canadian research universities and holds four Canada Excellence Research Chairs.

University of Montreal
