Should I live in Leicester or London for UEL, and which tenancy length is best?

Student Query

Hi, this is Shuvankar Bhowmick, and I have been accepted into the University of East London. I want to look for student accommodation; however, since I am on campus only twice a week for my course. Since London is the most expensive city to rent in, I am looking at Leicester instead. It seems to be 50% to 55% cheaper than London. But is that actually commutable and realistic? Otherwise, if I do stay in London, can I find any affordable housing options? Also, what tenancy length should I go for — 40, 43, or 51 weeks?

Goal

To compare living in Leicester vs London for the University of East London and choose the right tenancy length.

Constraints
  • Unsure if commuting from Leicester to UEL twice a week is practical
  • Looking for a more affordable alternative to London accommodation
  • Confused between 40, 43, and 51-week tenancy options
  • Wants a studio within budget with flexible tenancy terms
  • Needs help balancing accommodation costs with travel expenses

Answer Summary

Yes, renting in Leicester is a good option for students looking for cheaper accommodation. One important aspect they’d need to factor in is travel. While geographically, this is workable since there are direct routes. This is workable for two days a week if Shuvankar starts his days and is comfortable with travelling. Also, buying a 16-25 digital railcard covers a few trips or lets you book train and coach tickets in advance. Students also get a discount on Student Beans or UNiDAYS, which can be availed. If timetabling shifts to more in-person days at the university in a later term, the commute math will later change. Also, paying for a 51-week tenancy in their student accommodation makes more sense, as he will be in the UK year-round and will not have to worry about re-securing a room in the middle of the year. But if Shuvankar intends to travel home during university breaks, then 43 weeks is the safer middle ground rather than the cheapest. Based on the current situation, Shuvankar found it feasible to rent an apartment in Leicester, specifically at Edge Apartment Leicester, and to commute to the University of East London twice a week.
