Heslach and Stuttgart-Süd are bustling city neighbourhoods where you'll find everything you need for your day-to-day life.
There are bakeries, butchers, takeaway services, restaurants, and small grocery stores in the immediate vicinity of the apartment. Many of these are located on or around Böblingerstr. close to the Bihlplatz U-Bahn station. Just walk around. You'll find everything without making much of an effort. There is also a small farmer's market every Saturday morning at Bihlplatz (directly in front of the U-Bahn station) where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, bread, meat, and flowers.
For larger supermarkets, you can either walk (in about 15 minutes) or take the U-Bahn two stops to Marienplatz in Stuttgart-Süd. Once you get there, have a walk around Marienplatz and you'll find two REWE supermarkets, a large DM drugstore, and an organic supermarket.
If you would like to go for a sauna or a swim, there is a public swimming pool a ten-minute walk from the house (Stadtbad Heslach, Mörikestraße 62). To find out about opening hours, just type "Hallenbad Heslach" into Google.
For a walk or run in the woods, head to Müllerstraße. Walk to the end of the street and you'll see a path that leads into a wooded area. Joggers be warned: Stuttgart is extremely hilly :).
For a scenic view of the city, you can take the Zahnradbahn (ZACKE) from Marienplatz to Degerloch. To return to Heslach, you can either ride back down with the ZACKE, or walk through the woods from Degerloch. The walk takes about 40 minutes.
The beergarden at Karlshöhe also offers a stunning view of the city. Located at the top of a vineyard, you can either sit in the beergarden or on the park benches overlooking the city. To get there, walk up Hohenstaufenstr. from Marienplatz and take a left at the massive flight of stairs. Once at the top, take a right and walk up the hill until you get to the footpath. Walk to the very top, order a beer, catch your breath, and enjoy the view.
To get to downtown Stuttgart, just take the U1 or the U14 from Bihlplatz. The trip to Hauptbahnhof (central station) takes 12 minutes. To get to Stuttgart's main shopping street (Königstr.), and to many of the city's museums, galleries, and theaters, you can hop off at Charlottenplatz and walk from there.
