A tower operated by the guild of blacksmiths, responsible for the defense of the city, was located at the canal side from 1145 onwards. From 1642 onwards, the tower has been used for meteorological and astronomical purposes until the tower was taken down in 1855. Nowadays a sign with info that remembers one of this history is to be found in the pavement.
