Already in Roman times a trade route between the Murtal and the Roman province Colonia Claudia Savaria ran here. Today, Sporgasse is one of the main pedestrian and shopping streets in the city. In hardly any other street can you read the architectural history of Graz as well as in Sporgasse. At the corner of the main square is the baroque Luegg house with its mighty facade and the arcade. Opposite is an Art Nouveau building with floral decorations and medallions with women's heads, some in gold. A little further up is a baroque building, whose large portal shows a riding image of St. John of Nepomuk.Further up is the old Deutschritterordenshaus, whose courtyard is still paved today with "Murnockerln" (stones from the Mur), as it used to be.
